The standard definition of success is the achievement of a resolution or an ambition. However, the definition continues to receive contradictions especially in the frontiers of financial freedom, housing, and owning a car. In the construct of American Dream, individuals yearn for greater things, including owning a yacht, a billion dollars in the bank, or a bungalow by the lake. Conversely, the definition of success does not list the former, but rather provides a wider concept of both internal and external fulfillment. Notably, many have lost their purpose in life because of the thinking that success is only in materialistic frontiers, which should not be the case. Tentatively, to balance the physical, emotional, social, and cognitive aspects of an individual, success is not about materialistic frontiers but rather broader concepts of emotional, social, cognitive, and physical achievement.
Happiness is one of the key factors that define success. The attributes of social, cognitive, physical, and emotional well-being are centered on the happiness of an individual life. Individuals may find happiness in luxurious lifestyles like owning a Porsche or a bungalow on an island. Others may find happiness in owning a bicycle or a simple house by the forest. In their own accord, both groups are successful because they are happy with every aspect of their lives. Importantly, success renders an individual happy, as the two are directly linked. For instance, if having a loving and happy family makes an individual happy, and they attain it in the long run, then that is their success. Therefore, if having a luxurious lifestyle does not bring happiness, then success is not definitive.
Success and a healthy lifestyle cannot be separated. Frankly, feeling unhealthy renders an individual unsuccessful. Being healthy tells an individual is fulfilled physically, cognitively, and emotionally. Many patients and doctors view a health procedure or positive medication as success because an individual gets their health in check. Rather, no material frontiers can assure individual good health but mingle with nurses, health couches and doctors to educate oneself on successful healthy lifestyle. As an individual is thinking of success, they should factor in how their health is and what us their ambition in it. Notably, an individual cannot achieve materialistic luxuries of they are ill=health. Individuals in acute care feel unsuccessful because they cannot fend for themselves and depend on others for survival. Therefore, as an individual thinks of success, health should imperatively be an important factor.
Hardships and failing are part and parcels of success. In the youthful generation, many view material possession as easy sailing without facing hardships and failing at times. Also, the famous quotes, “You must fail to succeed,” proves the two are intertwined. I believe, failing in the face of hardships is a successful frontier in its own because an individual feels happy after overcoming the ordeal. For instance, failing to solve a particular mathematical problem helps an individual to successfully seek ways of attaining knowledge and render themselves successful at the end. Also, a success measure is always attributed to the amount of obstacle an individual achieves. The famous Albert Einstein failed 99 times but achieved success in the 100th attempt. In defining his success, the failed attempts are always looked at because of the hardships that led to success.
Concentrating on an individual’s strength rather than weakness defines success. Notably, success is portrayed by how an individual utilizes their strength to strike a balance between friends, family, business, material frontiers, spirituality, and self. Concentrating on areas an individual is weak in reduces their cognitive ability to excel in other areas, which plays down success. However, it is imperative to strike a balance between different objectives to emerge successful in one’s endeavors through their strength. For instance, if an individual works hard towards buying his/her dream car without minding their relationship with family and friends, they might end up ruining their social construct and be termed unsuccessful. Mostly, this is witnessed when individual concentrate on a lot of material things rather than other important factors in life, especial social connection. Therefore, employing an individual’s strengths in balancing key areas in n individual’s life greatly defines success.
In conclusion, although success entails achievement of a resolution or an ambition, the achievement should not only be overlooked towards material things, but rather broader concepts of emotional, social, cognitive, and physical achievement. If individual base success on happiness, health, hardships, and personal strengths, they will certainly live fulfilling lives which show true success. However, if they downplay success to only material possession, important aspects of life including social connection, cognitive soundness, physical well being, and emotional balance will be lost. Hence, an individual’s life will rather be termed unsuccessful.
