Module 1 – Case

SET THEORY

1. Let U = {q, r, s, t, u, v, w, x, y, z}

A = {q, s, u, w, x, y}

B = {q, s, y, z}

C = {v, w, x, y, z}.

Determine A∪ (B ∩ C)

2. Let U = {q, r, s, t, u, v, w, x, y, z}

A = {q, s, u, w, y}

B = {q, s, t, y, z}

C = {v, w, x, y, z}

Determine A ∩ (B∪ C)

3. Construct a Venn diagram illustrating the following sets.

3) U = {2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12}

A = {2, 6, 10}

B = {2, 4, 8}

C = {2, 8, 10, 12}

4. Find n(A) for the set A = { 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13}

5. Find n(A) for the set A = {x | x is a second in a minute}

Assignment Expectations

Clearly define sets and set operations.

Select appropriate set elements and distinquish between sets, subsets, and proper subsets.

Module 1 – SLP

SET THEORY

For this first SLP you are going to put into practice what you have learned about sets and counting. I want you to create two sets, set A and set B.

Set A will be a list of five items you personally NEED to buy the most (essential items).

Set B will be a list of five items that you WANT to buy the most (fun stuff).

List the items in Set A and Set B, and also list or state the items in the union and in the intersection of Set A and Set B.

Now assume that the prices of the items in your set A are 20, 40, 60, 70 and 80. Assume that the prices of the items in your set B are 90, 120, 30, 60 and 40.

Note: if you have one or two identical items in both sets, then assume that the prices of the identical items are the same as the prices that appear in set A (instead of having two different prices to the same item.)

What will the total cost of Set A be if it contains one unit of each item? What will the total cost of the union set be if it contains one unit of each item? What will be the total cost of the intersection?

SLP Assignment Expectations

Identify a set and elements of the set that would make up subsets. from the original set.

Distinquish between improper and proper subsets. Turn in a short paper with the above information by the end of the module.

Turn in a short paper with the above information by the end of the module.
